Hard Disk Scrubber .tmp files

Post by Paul »

I'm decommissioning some old hard disks and I needed to be sure they were data free, so I downloaded HDS and went for the three passes on the first drive. Not having used this sort of software before, I checked it by running Piriform's Recuva to see if all data was gone. There were 187 .tmp files present, presumably one for each actual gigabyte of this WDC 200gb drive. Is this normal? Are all these .tmp files just so much rubbish? Or do I need to securely delete them, as well?

Hi Paul,

Those temp files are left over by the scrubber and contain nothing more than the bit patterns used during the free space overwrite phase. They are meaningless, and don't need to be securely deleted.
