Hard Disk Scrubber V3.4 Cannot write to drive

Post by obeebeeo »

After installation of the Windows 10 Creators Update I get the message "Cannot write to drive: C", "Cannot write to drive: D" or "Cannot write to drive: G"
I have checked all the drives on hardware-errors: there were none. The Hard Disk Scrubber Logfiles contain the following.

That error means that windows is returning a "Path not found" error. That is what would normally happen if you tried to scrub a drive that didn't exist.

Try running the app "as administrator" explicitly. It should start up in admin mode, but maybe something in your update is preventing that.

I did execute the program as "Administrator", but that doesn't make any change.
I also gave every user full permission, but the problem persists.
I even disabled user account control, but nothing helps.

Because I've been using Hard Disk Scrubber for years without any problems up to the Creators Update, I think it's something in the update indeed.

I noticed that another user of the Creators Update has reported the same problem to Microsoft yesterday.

For the time being, I will wait and see.

Thank you for your answer up to now.

I just installed Windows 10 Creators Update successfull on my daughters computer.
Everything is working fine, however Hard Disk Scrubber doesn't, no matter which of the drives I choose.

I give up for now, waiting for better times.....

Give this a try: http://www.gizbot.com/how-to/tips-trick ... 38937.html

Not sure why Microsoft feels the need to constantly change permissions and things with each update, but this is typical of their mindset.

I'm having the same problem as obeebeeo, but i'm using a fully updated Windows 8.1, cannot write to any disk. Using Process Explorer, it shows a NAME NOT FOUND when creating the SCRUBWRK directory and .tmp files: http://imgur.com/EBnuWz6

After clicking the OK in the error dialog box, Process Explorer shows that the SCRUB_TEST.DAT is created sucessfully in the root of the drive: http://i.imgur.com/OZ6CCf1.jpg

Tried to run as administrator and in compatibility mode and the results are the same.

Nelson.

People at Microsoft claim that nothing has been changed, but obviously it has. It's hard to fix a problem, when it's cause is unknown, and it worked fine for many years previously and absolutely no changes were made to the scrubber that caused the issue.

Has anyone with multiple drives tried scrubbing a drive other than C: ? If it can still scrub other drives, then we may have a work-around that we could implement.

I am experiencing the same problem, too. After the latest Great Update of Windows 10 the Hard Disk Scrubber does not work. It is possible to start the program, but as soon as the random sequence has been created and the actual work is supposed to start I get the "Cannot Write to Drive" sign.

Microsoft may say whatever they want, but they DID change something!

No, Scott, even drives other than C: throws an error. The problem is the creation of the SCRUBWRK directory. If you create it manually, then the Scrubber works and even delete the directory on finish as the following log show (the second run is after the manually creation of the SCRUBWRK directory)

170529185633: ---------------------------- [Begin Scrub Drive E:] ----------------------------
170529185633: Custom scrub started at 18:56:33 on 05-29-2017

170529185636: ---------------------------- [Job End Scrub Drive] ----------------------------
170529185636:
170529185657: ---------------------------- [Begin Scrub Drive E:] ----------------------------
170529185657: Custom scrub started at 18:56:57 on 05-29-2017
170529185657: Pass # 1 of 1(All Ones) beginning.
170529185708: Pass # 1 of 1(All Ones) interrupted by user.
170529185708: Process Stopped By User at 18:57:08 on 05-29-2017, No Verify Errors
170529185708: ---------------------------- [Job End Scrub Drive] ----------------------------

Something in CreateDirectory is failing.

Thanks for the info. I have no idea what changed, and why creating the directory fails. It has to be a rights issue with the app even though it is running with admin rights. I know that 3.4 is not digitally signed, and that may have something to do with it. I will post a digitally signed version here in a little while for you to test. It will be the scrubber executable only, same exact version, only digitally signed.

Here is the signed version. Give this a try to see if it changes anything. Unzip the file and then copy it to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Hard Disk Scrubber directory replacing the original. You could test it without replacing the original as well as it has no dependencies, so you can also unzip it then run it from it's current location.

Hi, Scott.

The signed version exibiths the same problem. I've tested with Windows 8.1 in a VM and found that Scrubber works well until the April 2017 monthly rollup. After you install the May 2017 monthly rollup, Scrubber begins to give the "error #76". The MS page of this update (KB4019215) shows security fixes for the Windows kernel, but don't have more details.

Nelson.

Well that's not good news. I was hoping other volumes would work normally, but apparently MS has changed something in the rights structure that doesn't allow an ap running as administrator to create directories. This will take further investigating.

OK, I am running Windows 10 Home Edition, with Disk Scrubber v3.4. I keep getting the message "Cannot Continue! Error Writing to Drive C:" when I try to do a drive wipe. Interestingly though, when I create the C:\SCRUBWRK directory manually, Disk Scrubber v3.4 works perfectly, and even erases the C:\SCRUBWRK directory when the program is finished. It seems to me that a fix for this problem is not at all complicated. Just re-write the make directory code, because the rest of the program works great! I love Disk Scrubber v3.4, and I have been using it for years. I will continue using it with the work-around that I described above. Thank you very much. :P

How do you "create the C:\SCRUBWRK directory manually"?

Thank you.
